Social Security deadlines for recibos verdes

The two Social Security obligations

Anyone working on recibos verdes has two distinct obligations towards Social Security, with different rhythms:

1. Declare income — every 3 months (quarterly).

2. Pay contributions — every month (monthly).

Confusing the two is the most common mistake. Let's clarify each one.

The quarterly income declaration

By the last day of January, April, July and October, you must declare on Segurança Social Direta the income earned in the previous 3 months:

| Declaration (by the last day of…) | Income declared |

|---|---|

| January | October, November and December of the previous year |

| April | January, February and March |

| July | April, May and June |

| October | July, August and September |

These values are the basis for calculating next quarter's contributions. So the January declaration sets how much you pay in contributions in February, March and April — and so on.

On the declaration, you can also opt for the ±25% adjustment: declare a relevant income up to 25% higher or lower than what you actually earned, to increase your social protection or ease a weaker month.

The monthly contribution payments

Contributions are paid every month, between the 10th and 20th of the month following the one they relate to. Example: March's contributions are paid between 10 and 20 April.

August exception: July's contributions, paid in August, have the deadline extended to 31 August (instead of the usual 20th).

Weekend rule: if the last day of the deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. Payment can be made via Multibanco, homebanking or direct debit.

How much you pay: the 21.4% rate

The contribution rate for self-employed workers is 21.4% applied to relevant income. For professional services (the most common situation), relevant income is 70% of gross income.

Practical example:

  • You invoiced €2,000 in a month of professional services
  • Relevant income: €2,000 × 70% = €1,400
  • Contribution: €1,400 × 21.4% = €299.60

The minimum contribution: €20/month

Even with no income in a given month, there is a minimum contribution of €20/month. This keeps your social protection active (and it is also the amount Social Security assesses officially if you fail to file the quarterly declaration).

What happens if you miss

  • Late quarterly declaration: a fine of €50 to €250 and official assessment of the minimum €20/month contribution.
  • Late payment: late-payment interest on the amounts owed.

The exact fine amounts and how to avoid them are detailed in Late fines on the quarterly declaration: 2026 amounts.

Direct debit: the simplest way to never miss

If the monthly payment is your concern, consider enrolling in direct debit on Segurança Social Direta: the amount is charged automatically within the deadline, eliminating the risk of forgetting the 10th–20th window — or the 31 August exception. The quarterly declaration remains your responsibility (you must file it manually), but at least the payment is handled.

For the declaration, the best help remains a reliable reminder system: see below how to automate this.

A calendar that doesn't depend on memory

That's 4 declarations and 12 payments a year, with an August exception, weekend shifts and amounts that change every quarter. That's a lot to manage in your head — and each failure costs money.
