The ±25% adjustment on recibos verdes: how it works

What the ±25% adjustment is

When you file the quarterly income declaration on Segurança Social Direta, you are not required to declare exactly what you invoiced. The law lets you indicate a relevant income up to 25% higher or up to 25% lower than the income actually earned, in 5% steps.

The amount you declare is the basis for calculating next quarter's contributions. In other words, it's a lever that lets you calibrate how much you pay — and how much social protection you accumulate — each quarter.

How it works in practice

Imagine you're a service provider who invoiced an average of €3,000/month last quarter. For services, relevant income is 70% of gross income:

  • Base relevant income: €3,000 × 70% = €2,100/month
  • Normal contribution: €2,100 × 21.4% = €449.40/month

With the adjustment, you have three scenarios:

| Declaration option | Relevant income | Monthly contribution |

|---|---|---|

| Declare −25% | €1,575 | €337.05 |

| Declare the real value | €2,100 | €449.40 |

| Declare +25% | €2,625 | €561.75 |

The difference between declaring −25% and +25% is €224.70 per month — over €670 in the quarter. It's a decision with real impact on your wallet.

When declaring less (−25%) is worth it

Declaring a lower value makes sense when:

  • The quarter was weak — you invoiced less than usual and need to ease cash flow.
  • You're investing in the business — a month of high expenses (equipment, training) justifies lower contributions.
  • You have another source of protection — for example, if you also hold a regular job whose contributions already cover you.

When declaring more (+25%) is worth it

Declaring a higher value makes sense when:

  • You want to strengthen social protection — higher contributions translate into better future benefits (sickness, parental leave, pension).
  • The quarter went well — you invoiced above average and can absorb the extra effort without strain.
  • You're planning time off — boosting contributions before a lower-income period protects your rights.

What to watch out for

  • It applies to the following quarter. The adjustment you make on the January declaration applies to February, March and April contributions — not retroactively.
  • It's a quarterly decision. You can adjust on each declaration: declaring −25% in a weak quarter and +25% in the next one is perfectly legitimate.
  • Fewer contributions = less protection. Declaring less reduces the immediate cost, but also the basis of your social benefits. Discuss it with your accountant.
  • The €20/month minimum stays. Even with the maximum downward adjustment, the minimum monthly contribution is €20.

How the adjustment is done in practice

The adjustment is made on the quarterly income declaration itself, on Segurança Social Direta. After entering your earned income, the system lets you opt to declare a different relevant income — up to 25% above or below, in 5% steps. The chosen value becomes the calculation basis for next quarter's contributions, and you receive notification of the new amount to pay.

The most common mistake is making this choice "by eye": without calculating the monthly impact, it's easy to declare −25% on impulse and discover later the saving was smaller than expected — or declare +25% without realizing the extra cash-flow strain. That's why simulating first with your real numbers matters.

Simulate before you decide

Doing this math by hand, quarter after quarter, is time-consuming — and a calculation error is expensive. The FiscalPiloto simulator shows you, with your real values, the exact effect of each adjustment step (−25% to +25%) on your monthly contribution, so you can decide with numbers in front of you.

Combine that with the Social Security deadline calendar and pre-filled declarations, and each quarterly declaration takes minutes instead of hours.
